Dried ivy leaf extract (Hedera helix extract).
Description
The active ingredient is: Hedera helix Extract (Dried Ivy Leaf Extract).
5 ml of liquid contains 35 mg of Hedera helix extract from folium (5-7.5:1), 6.7 mg of potassium sorbate (Ph.Eur.) (preservative).
The other ingredients are: Citric acid, anhydrous (Ph.Eur.); xanthan gum; sorbitol solution 70% (crystallising) (Ph.Eur.); aromas; menthol; purified water.
5ml of liquid contains 1.925 g of sorbitol (Ph.Eur.) (sweetener) = 0.16 BU.
It is a liquid medicinal product for oral administration.
Prospan F Cough Syrup contains no alcohol or gluten.
Action
Prospan causes thick mucus to become liquefied, thereby making it easier to cough up. At the same time, the urge to cough is reduced.
Indications/Uses
Prospan F Cough Syrup is traditionally used for relief of cough, throat irritation and reducing phlegm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Always take Prospan F Cough Syrup exactly as described in this monograph. Patient should check with a doctor or pharmacist if patient is not sure.
Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is: (See Table 1).

Method of use: The liquid should be taken undiluted in the morning, (at midday) and in the evening. Can be taken with or without food.
For Prospan F Cough Syrup in 5 ml stick pack: The patient has chosen to use a stick pack that can be opened easily. Its content is also easy to take. Refer to instruction as follows.
Gently knead the stick pack before use.
Hold the stick pack firmly and tear it open.
Swallow the medicine, squeezing the stick pack until empty.
For Prospan F Cough Syrup in 100 ml bottle: Use encosed measuring cup. Shake well before use.
Length of treatment is dependent on the nature and severity of patient's condition. However, even in the case of mild inflammation of the respiratory tract, treatment should last for one week at least. In the interests of ensuring that patient's recovery is permanent and complete, it is recommended that the patient should keep taking Prospan for another 2-3 days after the patient's symptoms have disappeared. If the patient has the impression that the effect of Prospan F Cough Syrup is too strong or too weak, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.
If the patient takes more Prospan F Cough Syrup than they should: Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Ingestion of significantly higher amounts (more than three times the daily dose) may lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In this case patient should consult a doctor.
If the patient forgets to take Prospan F Cough Syrup: Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Simply continue to take Prospan F Cough Syrup as prescribed by a doctor or as directed.
Warnings
Prospan F Cough Syrup contains a plant-based active substance. These plant extracts can occasionally cause Prospan F Cough Syrup to become slightly cloudy or they may slightly alter its taste. However, such effects do not alter the effectiveness or quality of the product.
Special Precautions
Do not take Prospan F Cough Syrup: if the patient is hypersensitive (allergic) to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of Prospan F Cough Syrup (see Description).
Contains sorbitol: When used as directed, each dose contains 1.925 g of sorbitol. This poses a health risk to patients with a hereditary intolerance to fructose. Such patients may only take this medicine after talking to a doctor first.
Take special care with Prospan F Cough Syrup. This is a traditional medicine. Please consult a pharmacist/doctor if symptoms persist/worsen.
Driving and using machines: No special precautions are needed.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation: Insufficient reliable date
Use in Children: Prospan F Cough Syrup may not be used in children under the age of 6.

Side Effects
Like all medicines, Prospan F Cough Syrup can cause side effects.
The following frequency convention is used when evaluating side effects: (See Table 2).

Very rare: Allergic reactions (shortness of breath, swelling, skin, redness, itching) may occur after taking medicines containing ivy.
Uncommon: In sensitive patients, gastrointestinal complaints may occur (nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea).
If any of the side effects gets serious, or if patient notices any side effects not listed in the previously mentioned effects, tell a doctor or pharmacist.
Drug Interactions
No research has been carried out. No interactions have become known so far. Tell a doctor or pharmacist if the patient is taking/using or has recently taken/used any other medicines, including medicines obtained without prescription.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture.
